Reading time: 5 minutes

We are embarking on a journey to discover the origins of our teas. This time, we are headed to Malawi, a landlocked country in southeastern Africa. Our partner company, Satemwa Tea Estate, stands out among other Malawian farms by producing not just black tea, but also exquisite specialties like white and green tea. Remarkably, Satemwa was the first tea estate in Malawi to be Fairtrade certified and to employ women. Join us as we introduce you to this remarkable place, its skilled production processes, and the people behind it.

A Journey to the Highlands of Malawi

Founded in 1923, Satemwa Tea Estate has been dedicated to tea production for over a century. It remains the only family-run tea farm in Malawi and has, over the past few decades, focused on creating exquisite rarities that reflect a pioneering spirit and innovative curiosity. At Satemwa, exploring new techniques and pushing boundaries is part of the daily routine.

Tea producer at Satemwa Tea Estate Alexander Kay says:

"Even though Malawi has a rich history in tea production, what makes our location special is the opportunity for innovation. We aim to give our tea specialties a unique twist."

Nestled in the picturesque Shire Highlands of Malawi's Thyolo District, Satemwa enjoys an ideal setting for tea cultivation. With elevations ranging from 1,000 to 1,200 meters, each phase of the tea production process is managed with meticulous care and expertise. Fertile soils and an ideal climate contribute to the thriving tea plants.

Satemwa Tea Estate: Malawi's First Fairtrade Farm

Satemwa Tea Estate has been one of our closest partners for many years. In 2007, it became the first tea estate in Malawi to receive Fairtrade certification by meeting a range of standards, including fair pay for workers, eco-friendly farming methods, and transparent, long-term trade relationships. The certification has led to improved working conditions, offering benefits like maternity leave, regular medical check-ups, and protective clothing. Workers can generate additional income through the Fairtrade premium by making investments or improving their quality of life with purchases like bicycles or mobile phones. Part of the Fairtrade premium is invested in community projects, such as building schools and providing access to clean drinking water.

Promoting Equality: Fair Working Conditions

Satemwa places a strong emphasis on creating fair working conditions, with a particular focus on providing opportunities and protections for women. The company ensures women can work comfortably by offering contracts that include job security and maternity leave, as well as additional breaks for breastfeeding. They also provide a designated nursing area and childcare facilities and have implemented a ban on overtime. These measures are vital for establishing a fairer work environment for female employees.

While such standards should be the norm, they are not universal across the tea industry. Satemwa's commitment to exceptional working conditions is also reflected in offering higher wages, better housing, and improved education and healthcare for all its workers. As part of the European Specialty Tea Association, Satemwa has been instrumental in developing a standardized contract that has greatly improved working conditions on many tea farms.

A Diverse and Unique Tea Assortment

You can taste their commitment: Satemwa Tea Estate crafts a wide array of rare teas, lovingly and expertly handmade, which are visual and sensory works of art. Their passion for innovative tea specialties is particularly evident in their unique processing methods. For example, they produce the exclusive white tea variety CHIKONDI BEADS, where tea leaves are rolled into impressive, pearl-like cocoons. Another standout is LAPANSI ANTLERS, a specialty white tea that uses the stems of the tea plant, resembling small antlers. This tea delights with its mild charm and fruity-floral notes. From white to green to black teas, Satemwa's varieties captivate tea enthusiasts worldwide.

For the signature fruit tea RED HIBISCUS, the estate maintains close partnerships with local farmers who cultivate hibiscus, a plant that thrives in Malawi’s perfect growing conditions to produce stunning, large blossoms. When brewed, the dried flowers yield a vibrant red infusion with refreshing sweet and tart notes.
